Delaware offers logistics and distribution services companies a competitive edge.

Industry Overview

Delaware’s location at the heart of the northeast corridor offers logistics services providers, transportation companies and distribution operations a competitive edge. The State is less congested and has more available land than neighboring states, and is served by a highly developed multi-modal transportation system. Company operating costs are lower than in other states in the region, and Delaware offers economic incentives and state support to drive investment in the distribution network.

Delaware’s deepwater port, direct access to I-95, three Class 1 cargo railroads and the New Castle County airport provide fast, economical access to markets throughout the U.S. and the world. Importantly, Foreign Trade Zone status is available to companies located in Delaware. This means that the State can fast-track applications to receive more favorable tax treatment when companies bring in raw materials to Delaware and export finished products outside of the U.S.

Delaware is home to freight forwarders, distribution and fulfillment centers and logistics companies, as well as approximately 50 major warehouse facilities. Amazon operates two fulfillment centers in the State, and Walmart and Johnson Controls each have a distribution center.

Delaware’s Port of Wilmington is the busiest terminal on the Delaware River, servicing more than 400 vessels a year and handling more than five million tons of cargo. With the largest dock-side refrigerated facility in the country, the Port of Wilmington imports more fresh fruit (bananas, in particular) and juice concentrate than any other port in North America.
