Delaware's Sister States and Cities
Japan's Miyagi Prefecture and Delaware have been sister states since 1997. This beautiful, Pacific coastal region was devastated by a powerful earthquake and tsunami in 2011. In true sister fashion, Delawareans joined together to raise more than $100,000 for recovery efforts. Since then, the relationship has grown to include partnerships and economic exchanges.

The relationship between Kalmar, Sweden and Wilmington, Delaware go back to the 1600s when the first Europeans aboard the original Kalmar Nyckel tall ship arrived in what is now the City of Wilmington. Sister city exchange activities include music, sports, history and even visits from the King and Queen of Sweden.

Greve, Chianti, Italy and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware formed a sister-city relationship in 2010, although the connection goes back to1524 when Giovanni da Verrazzano, a native of Greve, explored the Delaware coastline. Today, the cities participate in creative exchanges of art and culture. The Verrazzano Monument on Rehoboth's boardwalk and the Rehoboth Beach Garden in Greve, Italy honor this relationship.

Wilmington enjoys sister-city relationships with Watford, England, Fulda, Germany, Osogbo, Nigeria, and Nemours, France and Dover's sister city is Iwanuma, Japan.
